Fish oil is a type oil that comes from the tissues of oily fish such as salmon, tuna or mackerel. Studies have shown that fish oil can help people in a multitude of ways due to its high levels of Omega-3 fatty acids which are thought to be beneficial in preventing heart disease by lowering cholesterol and improving circulation. Some other health benefits of adding fish oils to your diet may include:
Reduced Inflammation: Inflammation occurs when the body’s tissues react to a harmful stimulus. Getting at least three grams of fish oil per day can help reduce and prevent inflammation; which has been linked to arthritis, lupus and thyroid inflammation disease.
Mental Health: The omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil help the body produce more serotonin which is considered to be a natural anti-depressant. In addition to combating depression, many studies suggest that fish oils may help to improve memory and concentration, as well as effective in treating bipolar disorder, attention deficit disorder (ADD), and schizophrenia.
American Heart Association recommends that most people eat fish, particularly fatty fish, at least twice a week for heart health. Fish oil can also be taken as supplement however a medical professional should be consulted to ensure no pre-existing conditions are impacted by the extra intake of fish oils.
